Digital Radiography from Detector to Display: Acquisition, Processing, Evaluation, and Quality Assurance for the Working Technologist
Digital Radiography from Detector to Display gives the radiologic technologist and the limited permit X-ray technician a complete working account of the digital image, following it through the digital chain from the receptor that records it to the display on which it is read. Eight sections cover cassette-based and cassette-less receptors; image acquisition, histogram analysis, and exposure indicators, including the deviation index; acquisition errors, scatter control, and grid use; default software processing and the artifacts of excess; exposure fundamentals, dose creep, and current shielding guidance; a nine-step method for evaluating the digital image; quality assurance, panel calibration, and reject analysis; and image display, PACS, DICOM, teleradiology, and patient confidentiality. Written as fresh review material rather than textbook excerpts, the course threads clinical scenarios through every section, includes twenty-six reference tables and worked examples, and closes with a comprehensive summary built for retention.
Approvals & Acceptance
This course counts toward the 4-hour digital radiography requirement for California CRTs (and XTs with digital authorization).
This course satisfies the digital radiologic technology instruction required for the California X-Ray Technician Digital Authorization (form CDPH 9054). CDPH accepts Category A continuing education from an ARRT-recognized RCEEM; this course is ASRT-approved for 24 Category A credits, exceeding the 20-hour minimum, and its eight sections cover all eight required topics: digital image characteristics and receptors; image acquisition and exposure indicators; acquisition errors, scatter control, and grid use; default software processing; fundamental principles of exposure; image evaluation; quality assurance and maintenance; and image display, PACS, and patient confidentiality.
Submit your certificate of completion with form CDPH 9054 to the CDPH Radiologic Health Branch.

Applicable Disciplines
Learning Objectives
- 1Describe digital image characteristics and compare the construction, readout, and performance of cassette-based and cassette-less receptors, including dynamic range versus exposure latitude
- 2Explain image acquisition, exposure field recognition, and histogram analysis, and use proprietary and standardized exposure indicators, including the deviation index, to correct technique
- 3Recognize and prevent acquisition errors, including recognition and histogram failures, low intensity response, poor scatter control, grid cutoff, and the Moire effect
- 4Describe default software processing from automatic rescaling through gradation, edge enhancement, multifrequency processing, and noise reduction, and identify the artifacts of excess processing
- 5Select exposure factors for optimal receptor exposure, adapt technique for pediatric, bariatric, and mobile work, and control patient dose by avoiding dose creep and applying current shielding guidance
- 6Evaluate the digital image with a nine-step method for exposure level, analysis errors, contrast, recorded detail, and artifacts
- 7Apply quality assurance and maintenance, including acceptance testing, reader, plate, and panel care, uniform default processing codes, and reject analysis
- 8Describe display monitors and their calibration, PACS, DICOM, teleradiology, and compression, and perform annotation and image manipulation while protecting patient confidentiality
