Quality Assurance in Digital Mammography
The ultimate goal of QA in digital mammography is ensuring safe, high-quality, and diagnostically accurate mammograms. This practical course guides mammography technologists through essential QA/QC procedures from daily through annual testing. Daily QC detects equipment issues before patient imaging, starting with visual inspection of detector and compression paddles, phantom image evaluation for artifacts, and flat-field calibration for uniform detector response. Weekly tasks include repeat/reject analysis (identifying positioning trends) and monitor QC (brightness, contrast, resolution). Monthly procedures cover compression force testing (ACR recommends 25-45 lbs) and detector uniformity checks. Semi-annual QA includes trend analysis, AEC performance with varying thickness phantoms, AGD measurement for regulatory compliance, and mechanical checks (gantry motion, tube alignment). Annual QA encompasses comprehensive system evaluation and ACR phantom testing (fibers, specks, masses). Includes troubleshooting tips and documentation requirements.
